Health Benefits of Blueberries – Eat Blue

Whether in muffins, yogurt or simply plain – blueberries are always a fruity and healthy temptation. Blueberries are rich in vitamins and help with all sorts of aches and pains. Therefore, they are among the most valuable fruits of all. But what are the health benefits of blueberries exactly?

The answer is in the colour
The U.S. Department of Agriculture has investigated that the blueberry is most able to absorb the harmful free radicals. This is because of the high content of dye which is an antioxidant. A number of diseases such as diabetes, atherosclerosis and cancer are for example associated with free radicals. And several studies showed that anthocyanin – the dye in blueberries – also has a positive effect on coagulation and therefore a lower cholesterol level. So you can say the more of this anthocyanin, the better for your health.

Brain food
The colour pigment present in berries has a positive influence on the brain. Studies at the University of Cincinnati in Ohio found that regular intake of blueberry juice has a positive effect on the memory of seniors. The participants who drank blueberry juice everyday had more power, could remember more and were in a better mood.

Forget supplements
Another health benefit of blueberries is the content of many vitamins and minerals like vitamin C, E, B, magnesium and iron. The potassium content has a positive diuretic effect, while iron is responsible for the formation of blood. Vitamin C is for a strong immune system, vitamin E is famous for its beauty effects and magnesium is especially important for athletes, women and kids.

Better eyesight
Vitamin A is not only a beautifier with its positive effects on the skin, but it is very important for the vision – especially for twilight and night vision because it is an important component of the light-sensitive visual purple of the retina.

Natural remedy
Blueberries in dried form can help to relieve diarrhoea. The tannins content have a positive effect on the digestive organs and are stringent. Boil three to four tablespoons of dried blueberries and pour the broth for about ten minutes. Then drink the juice throughout the day. If you don’t want to use water, you can chew the dried fruits as well.
You should eat the blueberries as soon as possible, otherwise they will lose the nutrients. To store the berries in the refrigerator is the best way to keep them fresh, but no longer than one week. Another way to store the blue power fruits, is to dry or freeze them.
Of course, to eat the blueberries plain is the healthiest. But there are no limits to combine them with other foods. Just think about pancakes with blueberries, fresh blueberry juice, blueberry jam or compote and the health benefits of blueberries and I am sure you will add this fruit on your shopping list.
