McDonald's NZ launches nutrition labelling

McDonald's NZ launches nutrition labellingFrom October 2006, McDonald’s packaging on burgers, fries and salads will display nutrition labelling so customers can see what percentage of their daily intake of energy and nutrients are in McDonald’s products.
McDonald’s has provided nutritional information to customers for many years in brochures and on tray mats and this roll-out to food packaging has been welcomed by The Green Party. Health Spokeswoman MP Sue Kedgley is calling on other fast food outlets to follow suit and says, “It’s bizarre that all takeaway outlets are exempt from nutrition labelling and unless they voluntarily follow McDonalds’ initiative I believe this loophole should be closed and mandatory labelling extended to all fast food.”
Note that the label compares the content to an ‘average’ 8700kJ day. Energy requirements to maintain weight are highly variable: older, lighter and less active people need less energy; younger, heavier and more active people need more. Estimated energy needs for a 61kg, 1.65m tall woman vary from 7100kJ (if sedentary) to 10,500kJ per day (if highly active). For a 76kg, 1.85m tall man energy needs vary from 7400kJ (if sedentary) to 13,800kJ per day (if highly active).
